Garden building advice

Does a shed need a base?

Yes — every shed should be installed on a firm, level and well-drained base. A properly prepared foundation helps the building sit square, keeps doors and panels aligned and reduces problems caused by movement or ground moisture.

What is a shed base?

The base is the surface or foundation the shed stands on. Common options include a concrete slab, paving slabs, a timber base frame or a plastic shed base system.

Is the shed floor the same as the base?

No. Some sheds include a floor, but that is the internal surface you stand on. It still needs a stable, level foundation underneath it.

What about metal sheds?

Metal sheds often include a foundation or anchoring kit to help secure the building to the chosen base. The base itself still needs to be level, stable and suitable for the installation instructions.

Why does the base matter?

A good base makes assembly easier, helps doors operate correctly, keeps the structure square and improves long-term performance by reducing contact with standing water and damp ground.
